QCWA CHAPTER 70 



Minutes of Meeting    May 21st,1997 


Held at the  Carlingwood  Family Restaurant




    

  •  To begin with, the tape recorder that your Secretary-Treasurer uses for recording the minutes failed.  As a result, some items of business may not have been noted.  For this I apologize.
    

  •  Following a period of eyeball QSOs we sat down to the usual excellent meal at 1845 hours.  The business meeting was opened at 2010 hrs by the President Jack Tennant, VE3AHZ.  Keith, VE3GFI, introduced new member Joan Powell, VE3ZC.  Joan was first licensed in 1972.
    

  • 
 Two prizes were drawn at this time.  Marjorie Robinson, VE3CUR, won a money belt and Jerry Dillon, VE3AVI, won a copy of 'Hints and Kinks'.  Moved by  Croft Taylor (VE3CT), seconded by Jerry Dillon (VE3AVI) that the minutes of the Febreuary, 1997 meeting be accepted as posted.  Carried.
    

  • 
 Keith then gave a financial report as follows:

         Chapter 70 funds on hand    $2627.32
     Joe Alexander Fund          $ 973.25
     Total monies on hand        $3600.57

Some other useful info:
     77 mailings were put out for this meeting
     66 Chapter 70 paid-up members for 1997
     44 Chapter 70 members are paid-up members of QCWA HQ

  •  Croft noted that a recent change in Convention guidelines allows the Host Chapter to keep all of the profits.  Previously, the host chapter was allowed keep only 20% of the profits.  George Roach (VE3BNO) , moved that we send $500 in US funds to the FAR Scholarship Fund.  This motion was seconded by Jerry Dillon (VE3AVI).  It was noted that Andy Webb (VE3UIX) has sent in forms to FAR requesting a scholarship.  The secretary was requested to send the $500 'In memory of recent silent keys of Chapter 70'.
    

  • 
Croft mentioned that the QCWA Journal now has a new editor.  He is Gerry Wentz, KC4EHT.  Croft also informed us of changes to the QCWA QSO Party.  The rules will be changed so that in 1998 there will be only one QSO party for a 24-hour period.  Consideration is also being given to having a second QSO party in September.  Under consideration is the possibility of having an 'Associate Member' category for those hams that entered the hobby late in life.  These would be 'mature' amateurs that have not been in the hobby for 25 years.
    

  •  Doug Leach (VE3XK) gave us an update on RAC matters.
    

  • 
Several award presentations were given out.  Certificates were available at this time -  but the pins were still in Customs.  Charles Poole (VE3OJ) qualified for a 65-year  pin and certificate.  Due to Charles' absence from the May meeting his presentation will be done at a breakfast meeting.  Receiving 50-year  certificates were Ralph Cameron (VE3BBM), Don Bower (VE3BEF), Phil Robinson (VA3PR), and Keith Bedal (VE3GFI).
    

  • 
 The guest speaker, Clare Fowler (VE3NPC) was introduced by Doug Leach.  Clare gave a very informative talk on Amateur Satellite Communications, illustrated with overhead slides.  He especially noted AMSAT Phase 3D satellite that is scheduled to be launched in September.  This was followed by visual inspection of his home-brew antenna configuration.  Clare was thanked by Gerry King (VE3GK).
    

  • 
 A raffle was held for a Windom Antenna.  The fortunate winner was Keith Bedal (VE3GFI).  
    


  •   The meeting adjourned at 2150 hrs.The next meeting will be held on September 17th, 1997.

Silent Keys:- It is with regret that we announce that William (Bill) 
        Manson  (VE3YK)  became a silent key on  July 23, 1997.  Also,
        Frederick (Fred)  Hawkins, (VE3KH), became a silent key on
        September 03, 1997.  They will be sorely missed by their friends at 
        QCWA Chapter 70.
